Rajam, October 29, 2021, GMR Varalakshmi CARE Hospital, a multispecialty hospital in Rajam, Srikakulam district run by GMR Varalakshmi Foundation, today got a new 1000 litre oxygen plant.

Collector and District Magistrate of Srikakulam, Sri. Shrikesh B Lathkar inaugurated the plant in a formal ceremony at the hospital.

During the second wave of COVID 19 pandemic, the 200 bed hospital served people with dedication and compassion. Around 500 people were treated during the second wave of pandemic but there were no cases of black fungus.

In view of the impending third wave, the hospital has geared up for a wider range of services. As part of it, we have acquired 50 oxygen concentrators, liquid oxygen apart from the oxygen cylinders. The new 1000 litre Oxygen plant is the latest addition to the hospital’s armamentarium. The plant can produce 1000 litres of oxygen per minute to cater to round the clock oxygen demand of the hospital. This in fact obviates the need for filling of cylinders which was a bottle neck during the second wave, said Dr Rajendra Damera, Medical Director of GMR Varalakshmi CARE hospital.

GMR Varalakshmi CARE Hospital was established in 2011 in collaboration with the CARE group of Hospitals which is a Multispecialty Hospital, under Varalakshmi Foundation with an aim to provide state of the art and affordable medical facility to a large population of the Below Poverty Line (BPL) families of Srikakulam and Vizianagaram districts.

The NABH accredited hospital offers services in General Medicine, General Surgery, Orthopedics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Neonatology and Pediatrics, Anesthesiology, Dental, ENT, Critical Care, Nephrology, and Ophthalmology. It is equipped with medical, surgical and pediatric intensive care units in addition to male and female general wards, exclusive pediatric ward and labor rooms, offering affordable critical care and neo natal care. The Hospital’s centrally air conditioned outpatient consultation chambers in the Outpatient Department (OPD) block accommodates all specialties and it conducts planned super specialty clinics on a weekly basis.

Since its inception, over  7 lakh  people have availed of its Out Patient services, while  55000  patients availed of the In Patient services. The hospital, with its three well equipped and laminar flow operation theatres, has performed over  30000  successful surgeries, including over  2000  laparoscopic surgeries.

Apart from these, the hospital has successfully handled over  5000  trauma cases, served over  8 Lakh  prescriptions in Pharmacy, screened  3 Lakh  patients in Radiology department and  4.5 Lakh  plus patients in Laboratory services.

It has also performed several Joint Replacement surgeries and provided painless labor services for rural population. The hospital is affiliated to Government of Andhra Pradesh’s flagship healthcare scheme, Aarogyasri, which was introduced by Dr Y S Rajasekhar Reddy, former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, before the AP State Re organisation. After the split of the state in 2014 into Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, Aarogyasri became flagship healthcare scheme of Govt of Andhra Pradesh and is administered by Aarogyasri Health Care Trust.

The hospital is situated in a rural area, which is one of its kind in view of the state of the art equipment and infrastructure catering to the needs of people from two districts of Srikakulam and Vizianagaram. It also serves people from parts of southern Orissa.

During the COVID 19 pandemic, the hospital, affiliated to Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), conducted Rapid antigen tests. It successfully counselled COVID 19 positive patients and offered treatment to people infected with Corona virus. The Hospital has been identified as a COVID 19 vaccination centre for the town and nearby areas by the government.
