GMR Megawide Cebu Airport Corp, a joint venture between GMR Infrastructure and Megawide Construction Corp. of Philippines, today broke ground for the construction of Mactan-Cebu International Airport Terminal 2, which is expected to be complete by 2018.

GMR Infra JV won the contract to expand and modernize Mactan Cebu airport on BOT basis for  25 years.  GMR Infra is the  designated operator for the airport  and the company officially took over the responsibility of operations of the airport on November 1 2014.

GMR has brought in operational best practices which have significantly enhanced passenger experience. Moreover, GMR has taken proactive steps to boost tourist traffic, which has resulted in Cebu witnessing an impressive double digit growth traffic growth over 7.2 million traffic registered in 2014. The improvement in operational efficiency has helped Cebu generate profits from day one.

His Excellency Benigno S. Aquino III, President of the Philippines G M Rao, Group Chairman, and Srinivas Bommidala, Business Chairman Airports of GMR Group; Michael Cosiquein, Chairman, Megawide corporation and other dignitaries attended the ground-breaking ceremony, thus marking the start of construction MCIAs Terminal 2.

Speaking on ground breaking occasion  Mr Srinivas Bommidala, Business Chairman Airports, GMR Group  said, “Todays groundbreaking ceremony marks another milestone in this exciting journey. The new terminal will be specifically developed to let the passengers enjoy the Cebuano experience the moment they set foot in Philippines. Given our impressive record of building Delhi airport and Istanbul airports in record time, we are confident that we will open T2 to passengers by mid 2018”

Louie Ferrer, GMCAC President said, "As we break ground today for the construction of the MCIAs second terminal, we mark the beginning of our expansion, and emboldens our vision towards becoming the first resort airport in the world. In the past seven months, the existing terminal has undergone many changes which has greatly improved the experience of our passengers.

The development of Terminal 2 and the expansion of MCIA will allow GMCAC to launch more direct international services to Cebu and expand the number of domestic connections such that Cebu becomes a major gateway into the Philippines. Through this, tourism, business and leisure travel will increase significantly and positively contribute to the economic prosperity of Cebu.

In line with the inclusive growth philosophy of GMR Group, the CSR team visited Cebu region spending considerable amount of time and started working with the underprivileged communities for understanding their requirements, even before taking over the Cebu airport. The Foundation team has prepared a detailed roadmap to work on the areas of education, healthcare and community development.
